Most freelance sites like Truelancer or Upwork or …any of them aren’t worth your time. True, you’ll see some success stories, but it’s like .05% in the midst of everyone else that doesn’t really get any traction.

The best bet to get work is always:

Build a platform for yourself. Write content that is geared towards your target market. Choose a niche to market towards and keep diving deep in to that niche so you can speak to their problems.

Contribute to projects that are out there like WordPress Core. If you’re a designer, then do design work. If you code, contribute code.

Have some type of side project around and keep banging away on it. Show that you have something worth note to others in your field.

Finally, keep reaching out to potential clients. When I started I sent out 10 contacts a day every day for years so that I could get some work and keep the whole thing rolling.

Expect that going freelance is going to be a multi year endeavour to really get going. If you’re not in for that type of work, then don’t bother because that’s what it takes.
