I think the best way that I have balanced it, is by looking at it as a way to make the designing process easier. Being the one that is taking the pictures for a particular print piece, I know what photos I want and how I plan to use them. My big thing lately has been trying to work more photography into my designs.
Maybe you can push those commercial photography clients into a print piece, useing the photos. And then you have the best of both worlds!
