Assessment 1 – Stress Analysis of a Flat Plate
Linear Analysis This assessment covers learning outcomes 1, 3, 5, and 7 for this
module and the standard University assessment criteria for this level apply.
A triangular plate with a 35mm diameter hole and 3 fillets of R30mm is fully constrained at one end and subjected to bearing load of 8.5 kN inside the hole with the coverage area of 180o as shown in Figure 1. The material properties are listed as below: Modulus of Elasticity = 220GN/m2
Poisson’s Ratio = 0.35 Yield Strength = 240MPa
The flat plat has been designed with a thickness of 40mm. You need to perform 3-D Finite Element Analysis to determine a thickness of plate of the same length, width and material, capable of withstanding the same bearing load with the factor of safety of four, i.e. the maximum Von Mises elemental stress should not exceed 60 MN/m2. Your final thickness must be an integer millimetre value to use standard size material.
