In this interesting project, you will suggest several chemicals and
several methods to make green diodes.
You are a creative chemist, or materials science technician,
or a component electronics engineer, or equivalent background.
In order to begin qualifying for this project, please answer 3 of these 5 easy questions :

In this creative project, you will look at about 100 common chemicals,
and you will try to work up a composite of these chemicals, and appropriate production techniques,
which would allow us to prototype green electronic COMPOSITE diodes,
albeit low performance diodes.
Here are the suggested benchmarks and payment amounts :
Total amount for all milestones : USD$105.00 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Total time duration for all milestones : 19 days.
MILESTONE 1, Budget $25.00, Duration 5 days :
In milestone 1, you will identify the materials in the list which have semiconductive properties.
You will also identify materials in the list which can dope the materials to make the materials
semiconductors. &nbsp;You will identify them as P type or N type.
You will suggest methods to cause the materials to be doped, e.g. laser doping, xenon flash
doping, solution doping, core@shell, etc. &nbsp;Some dopants may make the chemicals simply conductive,
while other chemicals alter the bandgap of the semiconductive chemicals.
The lists contain about 100 green chemicals. &nbsp;Here are some of the chemicals in the lists.:
Semiconductors : zinc oxide, zinc iron oxide, attapulgite, bentonite sodium, ferric oxide, graphite, kaolin, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, mica, montmorillonite, SiO2
Dopants : alum, carbon, chlorophyll, nitrogen, zinc, salt, potassium chloride, sodium sulfate, carbonized sorbitol
Linkers or glues : sorbitol, animal glue, cmc, ‘Trisodium citrate dihydrate’’ , chitosan
Surfactants : lecithin etc.
Hole Transport : &nbsp;ZnO and others can be doped to become Hole Transport.
MILESTONE 2, Budget $20.00, Duration 5 days :
We want a simple composite diode. &nbsp;The composition needs to be durable enough for use
as an ingredient for a coating on consumer products.
We need linkers which will bond the materials together. &nbsp;Sorbitol is a pretty good glue
to bind zinc oxide to carbon.
Or we need simple chemical process to bind the materials together.
For example, with carbonization process, carbon will adhere to zinc oxide.
Or complimentary zeta potentials can “adhere” &nbsp;a first + zeta particle to a second – zeta particle.
MILESTONE 3 Budget $15.00, Duration 4 days :
We are printers, and we like particles, pigments, flakes, lamellar shapes, that we can easily
disperse into water or ethyl lactate or other green solvent to make a printed coating.
We also like photocopying processes to deposit flakes.
Please indicate likely semiconductive, and doped semiconductive materials that are inherently
flakes, lamellar flake shapes. &nbsp;Please also indicate semiconductie materials which can be formed into
flake shapes, using simple processes like ball milling, exfoliation by ions, exfoliation by ultrasonic
cleaners, etc.
Please speculate if the flake shaped particles would have sharp cutting edges after ball milling
or exfoliation during ultrasonic cleaning.
OPTIONAL Milestone 4 : &nbsp;Budgets $20.00 &nbsp;14 days
At your university or lab, do you have access to software :
Software that estimates the zeta potential of simple compounds?
Software that estimates bandgap of simple compounds?
Software that estimates the bandgap of doped simple compounds?
If you have these softwares, you and I will can agree &nbsp;to run the software
for several of the chemicals you propose.
MILESTONE 5, Budget $25.00, Duration 5 days :
After you and I agree to several candidate chemicals, you will review the scientific literature,
and try to find examples of green diodes. &nbsp;For example, the scientific literature has numerous articles
about silicon dioxide composite diodes.
You will prepare a simple list of the scientific articles, and send url addresses for the articles.
The OUTPUT of this project can be a simple spreadsheet, with your suggested compositions of
chemicals, with your comments, along with a list of the scientific articles which confirm your ideas.
