Hygral fatigue is a hair condition that results from excessive swelling of hair follicles due to prolonged exposure to moisture. It is a common problem among people with curly or chemically treated hair. In order to understand how hygral fatigue occurs, it’s important to know the three layers of hair: the medulla, cortex, and cuticle. The medulla is the innermost layer of hair and is made up of round cells, the cortex is the middle layer and contains most of the hair's pigment and strength, and the cuticle is the outermost layer and serves as a protective barrier for the hair. When hair is exposed to water or excessive moisture, the cuticle layer swells and becomes more porous, allowing water to penetrate the cortex layer. Over time, this can weaken the hair and lead to breakage, split ends, and other signs of damage.
